Tharoor Criticises Sarfaraz’s Exclusion
Shashi Tharoor, Member of Parliament and cricket enthusiast, has publicly criticised the BCCI selectors after domestic star Sarfaraz Khan was left out of the India A squad for the upcoming red-ball series against South Africa A. Despite an impressive record in domestic cricket, Sarfaraz did not make the cut.
Tharoor took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his disappointment. He highlighted Sarfaraz’s consistent performance in first-class cricket, saying the player averages over 64 runs across 57 matches and has scored one century and three fifties in just six Test appearances.
Strong Domestic Form Ignored
Sarfaraz Khan had shown promise in his early international outings, including a fifty on debut and a 150 in another Test match. Many expected him to feature in the India A squad, which will play two four-day matches against South Africa A. His omission has sparked questions about the selectors’ decision-making and the criteria used to pick players.
Tharoor pointed out that ignoring proven domestic talent in favour of potential can discourage young players. He also referenced other performers like Ajinkya Rahane, Prithvi Shaw, and Karun Nair, who have faced similar uncertainties despite strong domestic records.
Calls for Transparency and Fair Selection
Tharoor’s remarks have ignited a wider conversation about transparency in selection. He questioned the value of domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy if consistent performers are overlooked.
